Low kick

Low kick to the thigh in Muay Thai training

The low kick is a foundational Muay Thai strike aimed directly at the opponent's thigh. Executed from a stance with a high guard, the technique relies on swinging the kicking leg through so that the shin leads the impact.

Proper execution requires stepping or pivoting on the supporting foot to allow natural rotation through the hips and shoulders. The movement finishes by controlling your balance and recovering the kicking leg immediately back to your stance.

The low kick is used during striking exchanges to target the opponent's thigh. It is featured in foundational and technical programs such as Beginner 1 and Kicks Mastery to develop rotational power and balance control.

How to do it

  1. Step 1 Start in your Muay Thai stance with your guard high.
  2. Step 2 Step or pivot on the supporting foot and rotate the hips toward the opponent's thigh.
  3. Step 3 Swing the kicking leg through with the shin leading the strike.
  4. Step 4 Let the shoulders rotate naturally while maintaining balance and control.
  5. Step 5 Recover the leg and return immediately to your stance.
Coach tip

Turn the supporting foot and hip fully. Strike through the target with the shin while keeping enough balance to recover quickly.

Common mistakes

  • Failing to fully turn the supporting foot and hips toward the target during the pivot.
  • Striking without leading with the shin through the opponent's thigh.
  • Losing balance or dropping the high guard, which hinders an immediate recovery back to stance.
