Switch kick

Switch kick in a Muay Thai gym

The switch kick is a Muay Thai technique executed by stepping or pivoting on the supporting foot, rotating the hips, and swinging the kicking leg through with the shin leading the strike. It is practiced across foundational modules such as Beginner 1 and specialized courses like Kicks Mastery.

Starting from a high guard, the strike uses natural shoulder rotation and body control to strike through the target. The technique emphasizes balance to allow an immediate return to your stance after impact.

How to do it

  1. Step 1 Start in your Muay Thai stance with your guard high.
  2. Step 2 Step or pivot on the supporting foot and rotate the hips toward the target.
  3. Step 3 Swing the kicking leg through with the shin leading the strike.
  4. Step 4 Let the shoulders rotate naturally while maintaining balance and control.
  5. Step 5 Recover the leg and return immediately to your stance.
Coach tip

Turn the supporting foot and hip fully. Strike through the target with the shin while keeping enough balance to recover quickly.

Common mistakes

  • Failing to fully turn the supporting foot and hip toward the target.
  • Striking with the foot or ankle rather than leading with the shin.
  • Dropping the high guard while rotating the shoulders.
  • Losing balance during the swing, which delays recovery back into stance.
